Additional Information Nirmala (her original name) started acting at a very young age of five, under P Pullayya, in a Tamil film: Maccharekai. She got her screen name after acting in VIJAYA studios' "enga veetu penn" (The Tamil remake of Telugu "shaavukaaru"). She had a brief role as child Krishna in 'pAnDuranga mahAtmyam'. This was her last role as a child artist. She played adult roles in many Tamil and Malayalam films, before acting in Telugu field in which 'rangula raaTnam' and 'saakshi' (both in 1967) gave her first big breaks. She may have also acted in some Malayalam films of early 60s under the pseudonyms: Neeraja, Usha Kumari. But these are not listed in her official filmographies. Made her directorial debut with "meenaa" (Telugu) in 1973. She also directed "Kavitha" (1976) which was made in both Malayalam and Telugu. She has the unique distinction of directing maximum number of films (around 40 as of 1996) as female director and won a place in the Guinness Book of world records.
